Luxury Resale & Provenance: The Story Behind Every Object
In luxury resale, an object is more than its label. Its provenance, value, history, and personal meaning all become part of its story.
The way people search for pre-owned luxury is changing.
According to The RealReal’s 2026 Resale Report, demand for vintage has increased 432% since 2020, while decade-specific saved searches grew 135% year over year.
More interestingly, collectors are becoming increasingly specific. Searches for “Phoebe Philo Celine” increased 650%, while “Nicolas Ghesquière Balenciaga” rose 400% and “Marc Jacobs Louis Vuitton” increased 375%.
Collectors aren't simply looking for a label anymore. They're looking for a particular designer, era and history.
The Record That Establishes What It Is
A Celine piece isn't necessarily just a Celine piece.
Who designed it? When was it made? Where was it purchased? Has it been authenticated? What is its current condition and valuation?
Receipts, provenance, authentication, valuations, insurance documentation and condition records help establish an object's history and value.
As collectors become more discerning, keeping that information together becomes increasingly important.
The Story That Explains Why It Matters
But there is another part of an object's history that can't be found on a receipt.
Why did you choose it?
A watch might mark an achievement. A handbag might have been carried to an important moment. A piece of jewellery might have passed through generations.
These details don't necessarily determine monetary value, but they preserve something equally important: meaning.
And unlike a receipt, those stories can disappear completely if nobody records them.
Preserving Both
At Ethereal, we believe a meaningful object has both a documented history and a personal one.
One tells us what the object is, where it came from and what it is worth.
The other tells us who it belonged to, what it represents and why it was worth keeping.
Ethereal brings those records together in one place; provenance, valuation, authentication, condition and protection alongside photographs, memories and personal history.
Because preserving an object isn't only about documenting its value.
It's about preserving the full story it carries.
